Phantom availability: the hotels that advertise a price and sell you nothing
Some Wyndham hotels show an award price on every map, ours included, and then refuse to sell you a night. We went looking for how many.
Of the 8,325 hotels in our latest capture, 871 — 10.5% — returned no price on any date we tried. We checked 8 dates spread across a year, then took every hotel that failed and checked it again every seven days for 14 months: 62 more attempts each.
What “phantom” means here, and what it doesn’t
A hotel on this list failed our checks. That is not the same as proving you can never book it. We can only ask about dates we choose. A hotel with a short booking window can hide between them, and some do.
That is not a hypothetical — it happened to us, on the example that started this whole page. Read the next section before you trust any of this too hard.
Treat the list as a reason to check before you plan a trip around a points price, not as a verdict. And treat the number as soft: it was 1,058 when we checked four dates, 940 at eight, and 871 once the failures were re-checked 62 more times. A figure that shrinks every time you look harder has not finished shrinking.
The one that fooled us
Wyndham Corfu Acharavi dropped from 30,000 to 5,000 points on 15 September, making it one of the cheapest beachfront all-inclusives in the programme. We tried to book it on seven check-in dates across four seasons, for one night and for a week, for one adult and two. Nothing came back. We wrote it up as unbookable.
We were wrong. Checking all 467 nights, one at a time, found 24 of them for sale — every one between 27 September and 30 October 2026, from $131 to $268 a night. It is a seasonal resort that has its current season loaded and nothing for 2027 yet. Every date we had picked fell either in winter or in a season the hotel has not opened. We even missed on a re-check: our near-term date landed in its 6–14 October gap.
A resort down the road, TRYP Corfu Dassia, has a full 2027 season on sale, so this is one property’s booking calendar, not an island-wide quirk. Corfu Acharavi is not on the list below — the closer look cleared it, along with 69 others.
That is the honest shape of this page. Sampling dates finds hotels worth checking. It cannot prove a negative, and anyone telling you otherwise has not tested their own list.
Where the ghosts live
We are not going to claim one cause. What the data shows is concentration: these hotels are not scattered evenly across the portfolio. China alone accounts for 398 of the 871, and the United States another 302 — the second of those being a rounding error against 5,842 US properties, the first being nearly half of every Wyndham in China.
Ranked by the share of a country’s hotels that failed every check, for countries with at least 20 properties:
| Country | Failed every check | Hotels | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | 398 | 875 | 45% |
| Korea-Republic Of | 11 | 30 | 37% |
| Australia | 10 | 31 | 32% |
| Argentina | 17 | 63 | 27% |
| Brazil | 8 | 37 | 22% |
| Thailand | 6 | 31 | 19% |
| Turkiye | 20 | 125 | 16% |
| Germany | 15 | 129 | 12% |
| Mexico | 10 | 105 | 10% |
| India | 6 | 84 | 7% |
China, and the 202 that gave it away
China is nearly half the list on its own. Split those failures by brand and the reason falls out:
| Brand in China | Failed every check | Hotels | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Super 8 | 202 | 202 | 100% |
| Howard Johnson | 46 | 92 | 50% |
| Days Inn | 56 | 150 | 37% |
| Ramada | 45 | 180 | 25% |
| Wingate | 4 | 16 | 25% |
| La Quinta | 2 | 8 | 25% |
| Microtel | 7 | 29 | 24% |
| Wyndham | 33 | 172 | 19% |
| Hawthorn | 3 | 21 | 14% |
Every Super 8 in China failed. All 202 of them. Bad luck with dates scatters across brands; it does not stop dead at a brand boundary. Something structural is going on, and it is on the record.
Super 8 in China is not Wyndham’s to sell. The brand there runs under a master-licence held by Tian Rui Hotel Corporation, with its own reservation systems. From the second quarter of 2025 Wyndham excluded every Super 8 China room from its published operating metrics — system size, RevPAR, royalties — and has issued Tian Rui a notice of default that could end the agreement altogether.
So these are real, open, busy hotels. They are simply sold through a different company’s booking system. The award tier follows them into the listing data; the rooms never do. It is the cleanest example on this page of a price with no way to pay it — and unlike Corfu, no amount of date-hunting fixes it.
Checked by hand: Super 8 Anyang Hong Qi Road returns “not available for your dates” on Wyndham’s own booking page, while a Chinese Days Hotel that priced in our scan returns a rate for the same night. The scan and the website agree.
By award tier
| Tier | Failed every check | Hotels at this tier | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 points | 501 | 1,725 | 29% |
| 15,000 points | 230 | 3,690 | 6% |
| 30,000 points | 130 | 2,848 | 5% |
| 45,000 points | 9 | 64 | 14% |
The cheap ones that will break your heart
These are the pins that look like the best deals on the map — 15,000 points or fewer — and failed every one of our checks. Check before you plan a trip around one.
Checked one night at a time
Sampling dates is how we got Corfu wrong, so for a handful of hotels we stopped sampling and checked every single night for a year. Some of them are hotels we had tried to book ourselves and never once found a night at.
| Hotel | Nights for sale | Checked | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ramada Encore by Wyndham Seminyak Bali | 0 | 365 | Nothing, all year |
| Days Inn by Wyndham Aonang Krabi | 0 | 365 | Nothing, all year |
| Ramada by Wyndham Aonang Krabi | 0 | 365 | Nothing, all year |
| Ramada by Wyndham Bali Sunset Road Kuta | 88 | 365 | This quarter only, nothing in 2027 |
| Wyndham Corfu Acharavi | 24 | 467 | One five-week season, then nothing |
| Wyndham Garden Kuta Beach Bali | 360 | 365 | Sells nearly every night |
| Wyndham Dreamland Resort Bali | 365 | 365 | Sells every night |
Ramada Encore Seminyak and both Ao Nang properties sold nothing on any of the 365 nights we checked. That is not a sampling artefact and not a season we missed — it is every night of the next year, one at a time.
Look at the pattern within Bali. The three Wyndham-branded hotels sell essentially every night of the year. The two Ramada-branded ones sell either nothing at all or only the current quarter. Same island, same demand, same points price on the map — different franchise plumbing behind it. The same shape as China, one island smaller.
How to spot one before you get excited
- Check the next few weeks first, not next summer. This is the one that caught us out. A seasonal resort often has only its current season loaded and nothing at all for next year, so a far-out date says “unavailable” about a hotel you could book next month.
- Then test several dates, months apart, in both seasons. Real sell-outs are clustered; a hotel that has nothing in any month is a different animal. One “unavailable” proves nothing — we proved that on ourselves.
- Search the hotel name on a tour-operator site. If Jet2, easyJet or TUI sells it and Wyndham does not, you have found the pattern: the rooms are committed elsewhere.
- Distrust a lone bargain in a resort market. A 5,000-point beachfront all-inclusive among 30,000-point neighbours is usually a data artefact, not a loophole.
- “Adults only,” a missing restaurant, a stock photo. A thin property record is a hotel that never finished onboarding.
How we checked
Every hotel in our latest capture was checked on 8 dates spread across a year, in low season and high, near-term and far out. Every hotel that failed all 8 was then checked every seven days for 14 months — 62 further attempts. The 871 below the line failed all 70. 69 hotels that failed the first pass turned out to have rooms on sale and were removed.
This counts rooms for sale, not award nights. A hotel selling nothing at all certainly is not releasing a points night. The reverse does not hold: plenty of hotels sell rooms and never release one. So as a guide to what you can actually book with points, 10.5% is a floor — while as a claim about any single hotel, it is only ever “we could not find a room on 70 tries.”
